若き光学技術者の思い出（故・中村要氏）

（REMINISCENCE OF YOUNG OPTICIAN）（Late Mr. Kaname Nakamura）

　「明月記」の客星出現の記録を、米国の”Popular Astronomy”誌に紹介したことで知られる、神戸のアマチュア天文家・射場（いば）保昭氏による中村要氏の追悼文です。

　This is a memorial letter to Mr. Kaname Nakamura by Mr. Yasuaki Iba, an amateur astronomer in Kobe, who is known to have introduced the record of the appearance of a guest star in "Meigetsuki" to "Popular Astronomy" magazine in the United States.

　射場氏は、"Appendix to Fragmentary Notes on Astronomy in Japan "（日本の天文学に関する断片的なノート）と題する報告を4編、”Popular Astronomy”誌に寄せています。なお、射場氏の報告は英文です。

　He has published four reports in Popular Astronomy, entitled "Appendix to Fragmentary Notes on Astronomy in Japan". Mr. Iba's report is in English.

　A great sensation was around aroused at the news in the “Osaka Mainichi,” reporting the sudden death of Mr. Kaname Nakamura, of Kwasan Astronomical Observatory, which took place on 24th September, at his private residence in Mano-mura, the lake-side village, near Ohtsu. 

　9月24日、大津市の湖畔の村、真野村の私邸で亡くなった花山天文台の中村要氏の訃報が「大阪毎日」に掲載され、大きな反響を呼んだ。

　This incident is not only a fatal blow to The Kyoto Imperial University, but deadly detrimental to the amateur astronomy, for no longer superb optical parts can be had from this most trandescent optician who had combined talents of Calver, Clacy and Metcalf. 

　この事件は、京都帝国大学に致命的な打撃を与えただけでなく、アマチュア天文界にも致命的な打撃を与えた。カルバー、クレイシー、メトカーフの3人の才能を兼ね備えた、この卓絶した光学技術者からは、もはや優れた光学部品を手に入れることはできないからだ。

　He was born in 1903, as second son of Mr. Atoh Nakamura, who occupies the post as Village Master of Mano, a quiescent village looking down on picturesque Lake Biwa, and had burning aspiration for heavenly science since in cradle, after graduating from Doshisha Chugaku, a missionary school in Kyoto, he entered Kyoto Imperial University's Observatory, then situated in the town, as assistant-observer at his 18th years of age. 

　1903年、風光明媚な琵琶湖に面した静かな村、真野村の村長を務める中村與氏の次男として生まれた中村氏は、幼い頃から天文学への憧れを抱いており、京都のミッション系学校である同志社中学を卒業後、18歳の時に当時市内にあった京都帝国大学天文台に助手として入所した。

　Under the assiduous patronage of Prof. Dr. I. Yamamoto, that director, he worked hard, day and night, and attained marvelous talents, especially in optical research. No one could, and can hereafter, cope with him in the alacrity with which he made progress; and his bright future was much expected by all those concerned. 

　教授の山本一清氏の熱心な指導のもと、昼夜を問わず努力を重ね、特に光学研究では素晴らしい才能を発揮した。彼の進歩の速さは誰にも真似できないものであり、関係者の間では彼の明るい未来が期待されていた。

　Recently, through the courtesy of The Director who always accepted his overtures re optical research, his laboratory could add a new grinding machine, capable of making mirror or lenses up to 30” aperture, with full sets of accessories, which J. Nishimura & Sons, constructed under his design. 

　最近になって、光学研究に関する彼の申し出を常に受け入れていた教授の好意により、彼の研究室には、彼の設計に基づいて西村製作所が製作した、口径30インチまでのミラーやレンズを作ることができる付属品を完備した新しい研磨機が加わった。

　He was very complacent with it, and was about to initiate 24,5” f4 mirror after Yerkes type, and 13.5” f5 petzval, together with 7.5” f4.5 triplet, and also 9” object glass for their guiding telescope, on behalf of the writer for use in asteroids and comets sweeping. 

　彼はそれに非常に満足していて、筆者が小惑星や彗星の調査のために使う、ヤーキス型の24.5"F4ミラーと13.5"F5ペッツバール、7.5"F4.5トリプレット、そしてそれらのガイド望遠鏡用の9"の対物レンズの製作を始めようとしていた。

　Plate No.1 illustrates 10” f3.8 Reflector with 4” guiding telescope of same type, owned by Mr. Shikuji Shibata, of Kyoto Imperial University, which was made by Mr. Nakamura, at the works of J.  Nishimura & Sons. 

　プレートNo.1は、京都帝国大学の柴田淑次氏が所有する10インチF3.8反射鏡と同型の4インチガイド望遠鏡であるが、これは中村氏が設計し、西村製作所が製作したものだ。

　The said mirror was ground and figured within a week at his leisure, and is rendering very satisfactory service to the owner. The largest object glass he made was 7.5” aperture, as per plate No.2, which he completed in 10 days, without neglecting his observation work. He made 4.5” f4,5 triplet for his own use and actual time for its completion was 17 days. Just prior to his death he completed a petzval lense with 5” aperture. Mirrors he turned out exceed 270 in all sizes. 

　この鏡は、彼の手で1週間以内に研磨され、形作られ、所有者に非常な満足感を与えている。彼が作った最大の対物ガラスは、プレートNo.2のように7.5インチの口径で、彼は観測業務を怠ることなく10日間で完成させた。また、4.5インチF4.5のトリプレットを自分用に作り、実際の完成までの日数は17日であった。亡くなる直前には、5インチ口径のペッツバールレンズを完成させている。彼が製作したミラーは大小合わせて270個を超える。

　The writer often saw Mr. Nakamura, dozing on a sofa by the side of grinding machine, running by motor, replenishing energy for vigorous observation at night. He had no hobby whatever, save optical and observational work. On every Tuesday he came down from Kwasan to the town and destination was always confined to the University, the works of J. Nishimura & Sons, to supervise the parts of telescope and its testing, and the only recreation that tickled him was to get candy and sweets at a confectionary on his way back to the Observatory.

　筆者は、モーターで動く研磨機の脇のソファでうたた寝をしながら、夜の激しい観測に備えてエネルギーを補給している中村氏をよく見かけた。中村氏には、光学と観測のほかには何の趣味もなかった。毎週火曜日には花山から町に下りてきて、目的地はいつも大学と西村製作所に限られ、望遠鏡の部品の検査をし、天文台への帰り道にある菓子屋で、飴やお菓子を買うのが唯一の楽しみだったという。

　When franchised from his busy routine work, he was at the desk, writing letters in reply to inquiries re “ modus operandi” of telescopes, pros and cons of refractor and reflector, and mode of visual and photographic observation, etc., put up before him from amateurs now ubiquitous in the country. To give lecture to amateurs’ meeting was his another pastime, and as was his motto “always at work,” if time allowed he edited books, all of which are and will be vade mecum to all celestial zealots.

　忙しい日常業務の合間を縫って、机に向かい、望遠鏡の「操作方法」、「屈折式と反射式の長所と短所」、「眼視や写真による観測方法」など、日本全国のアマチュア天文家からの問い合わせに答える手紙を書いていた。アマチュアの会合で講演することも彼のもう一つの楽しみであり、「常に仕事をしている」という彼のモットーの通り、時間が許せば本の編集も行った。

　The illustrious name, Kaname Nakamura, a laurel-crowned, young scholar, will be always in the mouth of all those in astronomical circles in this flourishing Island Empire through eternity.

　桂冠をかぶった若き学者、中村要という輝かしい名前は、この栄えある帝国の天文学関係者の間に、永遠に残ることだろう。

　At the request of Prof. F. E. Ross, of Yerkes Observatory, the writer handed him 2 copies of galactic photographs in August, and now it has become the last interview that will never occur again.

　8月にヤーキス天文台のF.E.ロス教授に依頼されて、銀河の写真を2枚中村氏に手渡したが、これが最後の面会になってしまった。
